The fear of digitization and cryptocurrencies could affect IOTA as well
We’ve known long before the NOAH Conference 2018 in Berlin and thanks to numerous studies and surveys that: “The thought of algorithms and cryptocurrencies triggers more people to react in a defensive manner.” As advocates for Tangles, we often dismiss this, however, this is a dangerous development with negative effects on IOTA. Far too few people understand the extent to which the new technologies can enrich social development.
The Noah Conference revealed: Only very few people are able to explain what exactly an algorithm is or how a cryptocurrency works. And yet they are very reluctant. People simply do not like algorithms nor cryptocurrencies. They suspect that everything is based on calculation, that it is inhuman and fosters the domination of computers. Many aspects are still unknown to the public. If you were to ask about IOTA in a representative survey, only an ever-decreasing percentage of people would know about this cryptocurrency. The speculators, however, are the exception; a bad reputation suits them perfectly. People trust people rather than processors.
Humans should make important decisions, so the common opinion. Meanwhile, the population is concerned about our data (Big Data scared because of the privacy) our jobs (Industry 4.0 is considered a threat) and even our democracy (populists are abusing the net). Everything is being threatened by the networks, the tech giants from Silicon Valley and the digital data collection, it reads in countless essays. “At what point in this fast-paced digital game do we think about the people?” is the anxious question.
The human being live as though they were the main actor in the game of life. We imagine that we make decisions autonomously, that we are an entity wearing the captain’s armband. Many people cling to structures that are doomed to death. Simply because these kinds of structures are where we have been deriving an understanding of ourselves from for centuries.
The driver decides when to refuel the car and not the autonomous vehicle itself. In the hospital, a doctor decides whether surgery will be performed or not. The human turns on the washing machine, if he considers it necessary. Should we allow machines to make these decisions for us? That IOTA can contribute to help solving major global problems may convince one or the other. But — what about the crowd?
As IOTA advocates, we cannot ignore the fear spreading among the population.
It should be noted that we should allow ourselves to be helped by computers, algorithms and cryptocurrencies in order to make better decisions and achieve faster cash flows. In order for IOTA to contribute to the well-being of the civilization, people need to understand what it is and how it can be of use. IOTA is more than a cryptocurrency and will achieve long-term success if the population is fully involved and convinced of its applications. The majority needs to agree that the Tangle (incomprehensible structures for many people) offers great benefits. Nevertheless, one of the greatest challenges of our time is to prepare the population for the digitization and the Internet of Everything. The public IOTA project has set itself the goal to provide information through education.
If we do not succeed in winning over the population, Tangles’ project will be slowed down. If, on the other hand, a large part of the population supports IOTA and its projects, things will be set in motion and more and more momentum is gained producing exponential growth. It’ll be a self-runner.
